Landscape light plan

Foreground shape, sky texture, clean horizons, and enough time for setup. Arrive before blue hour so composition is ready before the color window peaks.

Warm low-angle light for landscapes, portraits, travel scenes, and textured foregrounds.

Evening golden hour

8:04 PM - 8:47 PM

The classic warm directional window for portraits, landmarks, silhouettes, and compressed sun shots.

Morning blue hour

5:08 AM - 5:22 AM

Cool pre-sunrise color for cityscapes, travel atmosphere, and quiet landscape setup.

Evening blue hour

9:08 PM - 9:21 PM

Balanced sky and artificial light for cityscapes, travel work, and environmental portraits.

Astronomical dark

10:58 PM - 3:32 AM

The practical dark-sky planning window for stars, Milky Way attempts, and long-exposure night work.

Twilight planner

Civil, nautical, and astronomical windows

Civil twilight

Bright enough for most outdoor movement and low-contrast photo/video work.

Dawn

5:08 AM

Dusk

9:21 PM

Nautical twilight

Darker blue skies, visible horizon, and stronger city/sky contrast.

Dawn

4:24 AM

Dusk

10:05 PM

Astronomical twilight

Sun is far enough below the horizon for serious dark-sky planning.

Weather API not connected

58/100 light flexibility

Use this as a planning shell until live forecast data is added.

Moon API not connected

55/100 dark-sky fit

Moon phase is a placeholder until a lunar provider is wired in.

Milky Way visibility placeholder

Mixed placeholder

Possible, but this needs live moon timing, cloud cover, light pollution, and seasonal Milky Way core visibility before trusting the plan.

Planning FAQ

Light planning without the old calculator feel

This tool makes sunrise, sunset, twilight, and dark-sky timing actionable for the way photographers actually pack, move, scout, and shoot.

What does the Golden Hour and Astro Planner calculate?

It estimates sunrise, sunset, golden hour, blue hour, civil twilight, nautical twilight, astronomical twilight, dark-sky planning windows, focal lengths, gear, and packing checklist suggestions.

Are the sun and twilight times live API results?

No. The current version calculates sun and twilight times locally from latitude, longitude, date, and time zone. Weather, moon phase, and Milky Way visibility are clearly labeled placeholders until live providers are connected.

Why do blue hour and astronomical twilight matter?

Blue hour balances sky color with city or ambient lights. Astronomical twilight marks when the sun is far enough below the horizon for serious star and Milky Way planning.

Can this help plan portrait and travel shoots too?

Yes. The planner includes portrait, landscape, travel, sunrise, sunset, cityscape, and astro modes with different focal length, kit, timing, and checklist guidance.

Will GearAtlas connect this to weather and moon APIs later?

Yes. The interface is structured for weather, moon phase, Milky Way core visibility, light pollution, and location-based guide integrations.
